Boulder Real Estate Market: Which City is the County's Fastest-Growing?
Posted by Phil Boren on Wednesday, June 30th, 2010 at 4:03pm.Boulder real estate market: Which city is the County's fastest-growing since the year 2000? The answer might surprise you but before we reveal the winner, our research was based on population data reported by the U.S. Census Bureau, which tracks population as of July 1st of each year.
It's also important to note that we limited the contenders to Boulder County's 4 most populus cities, namely Boulder, Longmont, Lafayette and Louisville. Some of the smaller cities like Lyons and Superior had impressive gains, but were so small in the base year of 2000 that it really skews the results. For example, Lyons reported a population of 1,585 in 2000 and 2,098 in 2009 - an increase of 32.37%. Superior is another example, reporting 9,011 and 10,809, respectively, fo an increase of 19.95%.
Keeping all this in mind, the winner is Longmont! Here's a summary of the population data:
City | 2000 Census | 2009 Census | % Change |
| Longmont | 71,093 | 88,424 | 24.38 |
| Lafayette | 23,197 | 26,146 | 12.71 |
| Boulder | 94,673 | 100,160 | 5.80 |
| Louisville | 18,937 | 19,656 | 3.80 |
Boulder County overall reported an increase of 4.19% over the same period, so Longmont's growth rate is pretty impressive. While some local cities, like Boulder, have surrounding open space that physiclly limits some growth, Longmont clearly out-paced the crowd over the last several years.
