Moving to Colorado: Where Are People Moving To and Moving From?

Moving to Colorado . . . it's beeen a pretty popular thing to do lately! Each year United Van Lines publishes a "migration study", which tracks all 50 states and their respective in and out-migration rates. As the nations largest moving company, United's figures tend to fairly accurately reflect patterns across the country. The most recently-released study tracked more than 140,000 moves all across the country in 2009.
If you've considered moving to Colorado, you'll be joining a growing number of people that did the same thing in 2009, ranking Colorado No. 7 on the national list. Our climate, number of sunny days and access to outdoor activities have always Colorado a popular destination, but recently it's also been the job market that has drawn people here (particularly in Boulder County).
Here's a summary of United's top 10 "winners" of inbound moving rates for the year 2009:
- Washington, D.C.
- Oregon
- Arkansas
- Nevada
- Wyoming
- Idaho
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Texas
- North Carolina
So where are all the people moving from? For there to be "winners" in this national migration contest, unfortunately there have to be some losers. Here's the top 3 out-migration "losers", according to United's study:
- Michigan
- Illinois
- New Jersey
Michigan has held the top spot on this infamous list since 2006. You can read the entire study using this link. It was also interesting to note that California, which has been experiencing out-migration for several years now, was rated as "balanced" in 2009.
