Boulder, CO
Boulder is a special place - a rare combination of recreation, culture, dining, shopping, climate, geography and altitude. “25 square miles surrounded by reality” - that’s how some people describe the community of Boulder, Colorado. Located about 35 minutes northwest of Denver and nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, Boulder offers a distinctive lifestyle with more than 300 restaurants, a vibrant art community, proximity to world-class skiing and nearly unlimited outdoor activities, and miles of open space. Boulder has been called . . . "The Place To Live", and the 2009 Census reported the population at 100,160.
Some of the largest employers are The University of Colorado (CU), the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD), IBM, Oracle Corp., Level 3 Communications, Ball Corp., and Covidien. Boulder’s International sister cities are: Dushanbe, Tajikistan, Jalapa, Nicaragua, Lhasa, Tibet, Mante, Mexico and Yamagata, Japan. What is a "sister city"? These are usually cities that are from geographically and physically distinct areas, with the common goal of fostering human contact and cultural links. It’s the combination of all of these things - but particularly the abundant open space surrounding the city - that makes this such a wonderful and unique place to live, work and play. Many people come here for a visit and never leave! Watch the videos at the bottom of this page to see why.
The city was founded in 1859, as gold was discovered about 12 miles to the northwest at Gold Run. Surrounded by over 45,000 acres of dedicated Open Space that encompass over 200 public hiking and biking trails and the 7-mile Boulder Creek Path that runs through the middle of town, Boulder is considered one of the best places to live in the country. Boulder has landed on numerous "best-of" lists in the last few years that reflect the diversity and popularity of the area today. Don't miss the Pearl Street Mall and check out other Downtown Boulder attractions.
One of the most famous open-space trailheads in Boulder is at Chautauqua Park. Located at the foot of the Flatirons, Chautauqua is a National Historic site and started Boulder's Open Space program in 1898. Watch a 7-minute video about Boulder and Chautauqua's history here.
Boulder has many historic sites and a favorite local organization called Historic Boulder, Inc., Boulder's first permanent preservation organization, whic has spent more than 35 years working to preserve these areas. They have been successful in preserving dozens of historically significant sites throughout the city and county of Boulder, including:
