Lafayette, CO was once a small coal-mining town that sprouted up in the 1860’s, when Mary Elizabeth Miller and her husband Lafayette bought a 240-acre farm. They dug two mineshafts that produced 1,000 tons of coal/day and in 1884, the richest vein of coal in the Boulder Valley was discovered on the Miller Ranch. Named after Lafayette Miller, the town was incorporated in 1889 with its economy based on coal mining.
The Lafayette real estate market has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with its population growing to 12,052 households and 26,146 residents according to the 2009 Census figures, with a median home price of about $312,000. The Historic Old Town of Lafayette is very popular and there are many new residential subdivisions, offering home buyers a great deal of diversity when searching for Lafayette homes for sale. Interestingly, the abandoned coal mines that once fueled the local economy, today represent an ongoing challenge for all the new development that has occurred in Lafayette.

Lafayette residents also have access to excellent medical facilities: Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center, Community Medical Center, and Kaiser Permanente Rock Creek Clinic.
Located about 11 miles east of Boulder and covering 9.3 square miles, Lafayette also features a number of new commercial developments. Some additions to the community include new shopping centers, as well as industrial and business parks. Fortunately the area has managed to maintain its character and charm, despite its recent growth.
