Lafayette, CO was once a small coal-mining town that sprouted up in the 1860’s, when Mary Elizabeth Miller and her husband Lafayette bought a 240-acre farm. They dug two mineshafts that produced 1,000 tons of coal/day and in 1884, the richest vein of coal in the Boulder Valley was discovered on the Miller Ranch. Named after Lafayette Miller, the town was incorporated in 1889 with its economy based on coal mining.
The Lafayette real estate market has experienced rapid growth in recent years, with its population growing to 12,052 households and 26,146 residents according to the 2009 Census figures, with a median home price of about $312,000. The Historic Old Town of Lafayette is very popular and there are many new residential subdivisions, offering home buyers a great deal of diversity when searching for Lafayette homes for sale.
