Longmont, Colorado
Longmont, Colorado is Boulder-County's second most populous city covering about 22 square miles, with over 300 days of sunshine and a spectacular view of the Rocky Mountains. Situated at an elevation of 4,979 feet above sea level with over 1,500 acres of parks and open space, Longmont is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Longmont is also home to several high-tech companies like its largest private employer, Seagate Technology, as well as Amgen Corp. and a vibrant restaurant scene. It is conveniently located about 37 miles from Denver, 16 miles from Boulder, and 30 miles from famous Trail Ridge Road in scenic Estes Park. The 2009 Census estimated the population of Longmont at 88,424.
In 1820 Major Stephen H. Long was impressed by the lay of the land here, but awed by the 14,256 foot mountain peak which dominated the view. Today that peak bears his name: "Long's Peak". The word "Longmont" is actually a combination of his name and "mont", from the French word for mountain. Later in 1871, members of the Chicago Colorado Colony purchased 50,000 acres along the St. Vrain River near the old Burlington stage stop, and founded the city. It became a hub for farming activities.
A warm and friendly town, the Longmont real estate market continues to grow, and boasts some impressive credentials. Being in the heart of Colorado's Technological Corridor, this city draws start-up businesses as well as established ones that choose to relocate to Longmont for a variety of reasons. Old Town Longmont is particularly popular and offers an Historic District, home to many fine turn-of-the-century properties that offer a central location and sought-after eclectic charm.
As a result of all its attributes, Longmont has earned a reputation as a great place to live and work, and the city has attracted some major employers like Amgen, Seagate, and others. With excellent schools in the St. Vrain Valley School District and a broad range of housing with a median price of about $220,000 (less than half of Boulder's), Longmont is an attractive place for employers to find a productive work force. Recognized as being in the "Top 100" of Money Magazine’s "Best Places To Live" in both 2006 and 2008, as well as being named "An All American City" by the National Civic League in 2006, Longmont clearly has a lot to offer.
Longmont's allure is perhaps best summed up by the CFO at Irrigation Water Technologies, who announced their relocation from Colorado Springs to Longmont in early 2010: In an article at the BCBR on 1-21-10, Mr. Collis Woodward said, "IWT America chose Longmont because of its proximity to the Front Range labor market as well as its atmosphere and reasonable cost of living." They are relocating 11 employees into a 12,000 sf facility in south Longmont.
People invest in Longmont real estate because of the relative value of the homes for sale, the small-town atmosphere, good schools, and the proximity to Boulder, the University of Colorado (CU) and Colorado State University (CSU), only about 30 minutes north in Ft. Collins. Newcomers are also drawn to Longmont homes because of the town's centrality. Many people who work in Boulder choose to live in Longmont, and make the short commute via the Diagonal Highway. There are numerous public events year-round, from rodeos to fairs, including the renowned Boulder County Fair each summer. Longmont home buyers can live, work, and shop all in one area, making this a desirable real estate market.
The northeast part of Longmont offers the Ute Creek Golf Course and there are many newer neighborhoods and homes surrounding the course in the Spring Valley Subdivision. The south part of town, and particularly the southwest part of town, has been the most popular in Longmont. With the newest schools in the St. Vrain School District and popular residential subdivisions like Creekside, Prospect, Renaissance, Lake Valley and North Rim, this area deserves the attention it gets from home buyers.
Today Longmont is the second largest city in Boulder County, with over 87,000 people in the northeast portion of the county. If a blend of urban and rural settings appeals to you, the Longmont real estate market may be right for you. Please contact us with any questions you may have or to see any Longmont MLS listing.
