4 Bedroom Residential Property in Lyons, CO
Lyons, Colorado
Lyons is a small town by almost anyone’s standards, but that small size belies the heart of the people that call Lyons, CO home. Located about 14 miles northwest of Boulder and 12 miles west of Longmont, Lyons was originally founded in 1880 by Edward S. Lyon. The railroad extended into the small community in 1884 and by 1891, it was an incorporated city. Today, Lyons is home to about 1,900 people.
Designated as an Historic District, Lyons has fifteen sandstone structures which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. These were all constructed of native stone by master craftsmen, between the early 1870’s and 1917:
- Griff Evans Homestead (1870)
Now the site of Rocky Grass and Folks Festivals - 480 Seward St. (1890)
Chisholm/Truebood Home - 413 Seward St. (1890)
Cunningham/Weese Home - 409 Seward St. (1890)

The Lyons real estate market is affectionately known as the “Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park”, which is just a few miles further west from Lyons, up Highway 36 into Estes Park. If you travel to the Park be sure to see Trail Ridge Road, famous for being "the highest continuously-paved road in America" as it meanders along the Continental Divide. The views from up there are awe-inspiring and worth the trip.
Lyons maintains it's original atmosphere and has many attractive small-town qualities such as antique shops, art galleries, homegrown restaurants and two riverfront parks. There are about 1,900 full-time residents that call Lyons home, but the population swells each summer when the Lyons Planet Bluegrass Festival is held. Many of Lyons' residents communte to nearby Longmont, Niwot, Gunbarrel, and Boulder for employment and residents also have access to hospital care in those same communities, i.e., Longmont United Hospital and Boulder Community Hospital.
Residents here enjoy living in a picture-perfect Colorado mountain setting, with a relatively mild climate; situated at 5,375 feet in elevation, Lyons covers a relatively modest 1.5 square miles. It is pleasant and cool in the summer and fairly warm in the winter, since it is located in a “bowl” surrounded by red sandstone. In fact, many of the historic buildings in and around Boulder and Larimer Counties were constructed from native red sandstone found in Lyons.
The town was carved from the surrounding red sandstone mountains by many of the town's stone masons. Red sandstone from Lyons has been used all over the U.S. in various types of residential and commercial construction, but some of the most visible and well-known local projects are the buildings on the University of Colorado campus in Boulder. If you cherish the simplicity of a small town, mountain living relatively close to major services and the beauty of Rocky Mountain National Park, the Lyons real estate market may be right for you.
