Nederland, Colorado
Nederland (affectionately known as "Ned"), is a quaint little mountain town about 15 miles west of and about 3,000 feet above the City of Boulder, in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Known as the "gateway to the Indian Peaks", it provides some of the best and most accessible outdoor recreation in Northern Colorado.
Barker Reservoir is a favorite Nederland fishing spot, Eldora Ski Resort is within minutes from the middle of town offering daily RTD bus service from Boulder, and both an olympic-sized outdoor ice/tennis park and skateboard park are within a short distance. You will find a variety of local shops and friendly cafés and restaurants, as well as unique local events such as Nedfest and Miner's Days. If you’re up for a fairly intense mountain “jog”, run in the Neder-Nederland and if history intrigues you, take a tour of the Mining Museum and see how Nederland got its start.
The largest mountain town in Boulder County and situated at 8,233 feet in elevation, the Nederland real estate market offers homeowners a contrast between semi-rustic mountain life and the more city-like atmosphere of near-by Boulder. Close-in, accessible Boulder County Mountain homes draw residents to the area. The Nederland population is at approximately 1,400 people, who enjoy the beautiful landscape of the area, and pride themselves on a strong sense of community. Tracing its roots as a settlement for gold, silver, and tungsten miners, the dream of riches drew thousands of people to build homes in Nederland in the late 1800’s. In 1874 Nederland was incorporated, and had more than 3,500 residents at its peak.
While the town used to be more of a destination location, today Nederland benefits from an increase in tourism caused by the stream of gamblers heading up the mountain to nearby Central City and Blackhawk. The amendment to the limited-stakes gambling limitations in 2008, to allow higher-stakes and 24-hour wagering, should only serve to continue this trend. About the mid-point in the trip from Boulder to the two gambling towns, people do tend to stop in and sample the local Nederland fare.
This former mining boomtown is moving ahead by continuing to take advantage of its mountain crossroads location. A vibrant new tourist-information center is now in place, and owners of the nearby Eldora Ski Resort have expanded their snow-making capabilities and upgraded their facitities. Take a look at the following video about Eldora:
These changes are boosting the area's economy and drawing new home and land buyers to Nederland. If you're looking for the simplicity of a small town, Mountain living relatively close to major services, nearby gambling and outdoor recreation, the Nederland real estate market may be right for you.
