Superior is located about 6 miles southeast of the City of Boulder, just south of the Superior/Louisville interchange on U.S. Highway 36. This town traces its roots to the late 1800’s during coal mining days, when it was first settled in 1861 after William C. Hake discovered coal on his property. Referring to the coal and claiming there was "... none superior in the state," Mr. Hake reportedly gave the town its name. Superior was officially founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1904.
The Superior real estate market has recently experienced both residential and commercial growth. Newly-built homes in Rock Creek Ranch, which dominates the landscape, have attracted new buyers, pushing the town's population to about 14,000 people and 4,700 households. In the commercial sector, new vitality has been brought into the community due to the building of the Superior Marketplace Shopping Center. The median home price here is about $390,000.
